Nematic quantum criticality in an Fe-based superconductor revealed by strain-tuning

چکیده
Pervasive criticality Iron-based superconductors are believed to host a quantum critical point (QCP), zero-temperature phase transition, beneath the “dome” delineating superconducting phase. Elucidating nature of this QCP is, however, tricky. Worasaran et al. set out do just that in prototypical iron-based superconductor, barium iron arsenide. By applying strain their samples, researchers found power-law behaviors characteristic nematic criticality. The associated fluctuations were present over large portion diagram. This method may be useful studying other material systems. Science , abb9280, issue p. 973

Ubiquitous signatures of nematic quantum criticality in optimally doped Fe-based superconductors.
A key actor in the conventional theory of superconductivity is the induced interaction between electrons mediated by the exchange of virtual collective fluctuations (phonons in the case of conventional s-wave superconductors). Other collective modes that can play the same role, especially spin fluctuations, have been widely discussed in the context of high-temperature and heavy Fermion supercon...
متن کاملQuantum criticality at the superconductor-insulator transition revealed by specific heat measurements
The superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is considered an excellent example of a quantum phase transition that is driven by quantum fluctuations at zero temperature. The quantum critical point is characterized by a diverging correlation length and a vanishing energy scale. Low-energy fluctuations near quantum criticality may be experimentally detected by specific heat, cp, measurements. He...
متن کاملThe New Fe-based Superconductor
The discovery in fluorine doped LaFeAsO superconductor with TC = 26 K was reported in February of 2008[1]. This discovery inspired researchers around the globe to study this unusual family of materials, which contain as their essential feature a square net of iron in the formal oxidation state Fe. In the following month of 2008, hundreds of papers were published on these and related compounds a...
متن کاملDivergent nematic susceptibility in an iron arsenide superconductor.
Within the Landau paradigm of continuous phase transitions, ordered states of matter are characterized by a broken symmetry. Although the broken symmetry is usually evident, determining the driving force behind the phase transition can be complicated by coupling between distinct order parameters. We show how measurement of the divergent nematic susceptibility of the iron pnictide superconductor...
متن کاملNematic electronic structure in the "parent" state of the iron-based superconductor Ca(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2.
The mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in the newly discovered iron-based superconductors is unresolved. We use spectroscopic imaging-scanning tunneling microscopy to study the electronic structure of a representative compound CaFe1.94Co0.06As2 in the "parent" state from which this superconductivity emerges. Static, unidirectional electronic nanostructures of dimension eight times ...
